What leaders can learn from the 2025 Blue Jays.

Toronto Blue Jays at bat during 2025 Season

Fans from all across Canada, and throughout the world, were captivated by what the Toronto Blue Jays achieved this post-season, and for good reason. They gave a master class in showing what is possible with a high-performing team.

After finishing dead last in 2024, the Toronto Blue Jays clinched first place in their division with 94 regular season wins in 2025. That's almost 30% more wins than the year before, including an impressive 49 come-from-behind victories. There's more. During the post-season, the Jays became national heroes and gained fans world-wide as they won their way to extra innings in game 7 of the World Series where their season abruptly ended. So close.

What made this team so successful?

Two quick observations as an executive coach:

  1. There was trust that everyone in the lineup could be a difference maker on any given day – not just the superstars. Time and time again we saw players lean in to that confidence and step up and step outside the shadow of others to deliver well above and beyond expectations.

  2. After a loss, the executive leadership was public in taking exclusive ownership for their decisions and the outcomes of those decisions. In the face of adversity, they maintained a positive mindset and had the team focused on the next opportunity to deliver.

As you reflect on your own role as a leader, are you doing what you can to create and nurture a high-performing team? What can you do to establish and maintain trust across the team? What mindset are you bringing to setbacks and what impact is this having on those you work with?
